How Facebook Determines What’s Viral

Facebook’s news feed algorithm is changing every day.

Changes to the system impact how many people see your posts.

While this can be frustrating to anyone trying social media branding, it’s a small consolation that it happens to everyone.

The sad news is, you can’t force something to go viral. It’s all up to how many likes, shares and comments the post garners. You can’t control how many times your post is shared.

Facebook defines virality as “the number of people who have created a story from your post as a percentage of the number of people who have seen it.”

How to expand your brand’s social reach

If you want to create viral content, some of the easiest ways to do that include:

  • Inspiring quotes
  • A thank you
  • Humor
  • Selfies
  • Memes

Try to incorporate your unique business characteristics into those categories to expand your social media branding.

Your audience wants to get to know you. Give them the chance by giving them an insider look.

Shift your mindset for social media advertising

Facebook advertising is sometimes a shot in the dark. There’s no way to predict how crafting ads will reach your audience.

The best mindset to keep when creating ads is that they’re more for branding and exposure versus ROI like sales.

Then if you can funnel potential clients to your website or a landing page, offer them a freebie or discount to share their email address. You can begin a conversation with them through content that matters.

Viral content isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s 30 seconds of fame that fades quickly. Sure, it’s fun! But don’t put all your eggs in that basket.
