Here are a few SEO rules to follow when blogging on your website.

SEO Rule #1: Use The Bikini Rule for Word Count

The length of your content matters when search engines are ranking your blog. 

The bikini rule means that when it comes to your word count or length, you cover just enough, but not too much. 

Great blog content covers just enough to cover the topic well — to be as comprehensive as the user needs it to be — but no more. 

This is an important aspect of digital marketing as well: you don’t want to turn your customers off with too much to read. Most users scan blog posts to see what interests them and then go back to read those sections.

In other words, don’t use fluff. You should never add words just for the sake of adding to the length.

As a general rule of thumb, if you evaluate your competitors’ content, you’ll want to be longer (read: more comprehensive) than them. Some SEO experts will say that Google prefers posts to be about 2,000 words.

SEO Rule #2: Place Your Primary Keyword Strategically

The main keyword that you want to rank for is your primary keyword. 

You usually want your primary keyword to be at the beginning of your headline. There are ways to play around with this; for example, Google’s algorithm is smart enough to know to skip numbers (for list posts) at the beginning of headlines. 

At least one of your subheads should also contain your primary keyword. 

Google also expects to see your primary keyword in the opening 100 words.

SEO Rule #3: Edit With Secondary Keywords in Mind

Once you’ve finished writing your blog post, go back and see where you can edit in your secondary keywords throughout the post. 

You’ll have to tweak sentences a little bit, but try to place as many of them as possible. 

Don’t make it unnatural. Don’t make it sound weird, but try to put as many as you can into the post.

When you’re embedding images and videos, place keywords on the image alt tags wherever possible.

Blogging is a key feature to building authority within search engines. Follow the simple tips laid out above, and you’ll be well on your way to your SEO goals.
